Adire styles are now trendy!
What is adire?
Adire or tie and dye textile is the indigo-dyed cloth made in southwestern Nigeria by Yoruba women.
It is like a trademark Yoruba fabric.
Adire is a major local craft in Abeokuta and Ibadan, one that from way back, attracted buyers from all over West Africa.
Abeokuta is considered to be the capital of adire making in Nigeria however some suggest that the large cities of Ibadan and Osogbo are more important in Adire making.
History has it that adire dyeing began in Abeokuta when Egba women from Ibadan returned with this knowledge.
The cloth’s basic shape became that of two pieces of shirting material stitched together to create a women’s wrapper.
It is kind of hard to trace the origin of adire, but some account of history says it dates to as far back as the 11th century.
Adire has since evolved to something much, much bigger.
The adire designs are popular in West Africa and the the entire African continent.
It seems to resonate with our African roots for those in the diaspora.
Even in Hollywood, the tendency to depict an African is commonly with the use of a character in adire outfit.
That is how African the design is.
